In September 1862, Tolstoy married Sophia Andreevna Behrs who was sixteen years younger than him. The two of them had thirteen children. They were madly in love when they were first married. They gradually developed a love-hate relationship. Tolstoy’s beliefs became increasingly radical, which took a toll on the marriage.
She grew impatient with his ideas about social reform and a simpler life. Tolstoy, in turn, did not support her interests in music and photography. Their later married life was one of the unhappiest in literary history.
