Tolstoy was a dedicated advocate of Georgism, the economic philosophy of Henry George, which he incorporated into his writing, particularly the novel, Resurrection. Georgism is an economic philosophy stating that the financial value derived from land, including natural resources and natural opportunities. It says that these should belong equally to all the inhabitants of a community, but that people possess the value that they create themselves.
Henry George sought to ecological problems based upon principles of land rights and public finance which attempt to amalgamate economic efficiency with social justice. Georgism is concerned with the dispersal of economic rent caused by natural monopolies, pollution and the central of commons.
