A sage is a wise old man known for his wisdom and respect. In the Hindu religion, there are epics which are long stories. There are some sages who are known as Kumbhasambhava and this refers to the ones that are born out of pitchers. The two greatest epics in the Hindu culture are Ramayana and Mahabharata. Agastya is a sage in the Hindu culture who was a recluse but a scholar and very smart. He was married to Lopamudra.
He is known for his hymns. He was born out of a pitcher because he did not have a normal mother or father when he was born. It was considered to be a miracle and that is why he is considered to be called a Kumbhasambhava.
Agasthyaru was called as Kumbhasambhava as he was born in a kumbha, (pot). Agastya was born in a waterjar as a fish of great lustre, hence he was called Kalasisuta, Kumbhasambhava, and Ghatodbhava. From his parentage he was called Maitravaruni and Aurvasiya; and as he was very small when he was born, not more than a span in length, he was called Mina.
