Three aspects of weather influence wildfires: temperature, wind, and moisture. As for temperature, wildfires don’t just happen in extremely hot weather but hot weather does make forest fires burn more rapidly because the temperature of the ground affects the movement of air currents. Also, radiant heat from the summer sun helps to make fuels drier and provides richer oxygen.
Warmer fuels will also ignite and burn faster because they are able to reach their ignition temperature more quickly. In addition, some pests which feed on trees, such as the mountain pine beetle, spread more quickly and kill trees, producing more fuel for wildfires.
