In the book Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck and published in 1937, the two main characters George Milton and Lennie Small have a job on a ranch near Soledad, California, doing tasks like moving grain bags and bucking barley.
George and Lennie are very different, with George being small and clever, and Lennie tall and lacking in impulse control. The two of them are working to make enough money to buy their own ranch where they can run their own lives and take care of their own land and animals. However, their job in Soledad does not go well, as discussed in the book.
