Leanardo Di Vinci was fascinated by the idea of man flying. Paul Cornu, a French engineer, designed and built a helicopter with an engine. Another French engineer, Etienne Oehmichen developed a helicopter with a vertically mounted rotor that rotates in the opposite direction to large lifting rotors.
Focke-Wulf FW 61 is commonly considered the world’s first functional helicopter, first flown in 1936, it boasted more modern technology and function. Sikorsky was the father of the advanced helicopter. Helicopters were made for observation, transport, and medical evacuation. In World War II, helicopters were used primarily for search and rescue.
