The Rastafarian movement began in Jamacia during the 1930's following a prophecy made by Marcus Garvey, a black political leader. Garvey commanded an organization known as the Universal Negro Improvement Association, whose intention was to unify blacks with their land of origin. He told his followers to look East to Africa for the crowning of the black king, which was to influence the minds of the black people.
The movement had a substantial cultural, social, and political effect on both Ethiopia and Jamaica. Garvey was one of the most persuasive leaders of the Rastafari movement in the United States.
