In the mid-1970's, the international popularity of reggae exploded. Bob Marley became very popular, and he introduced Rastafarian themes into the mainstream. Many young people who listened to his music were influenced to adopt a Rastafari belief system, which includes people in America and other parts of the world. The movement angered some Rastas because they thought the popularity of reggae commercialized their religion.
However, many young people were enamored with the Rastafarian way of life. Some may have used it as an excuse to smoke weed, but it had an impact on serious Rastafarians out there who believe in the cause. Rastafari is much more than a religion. It’s a way of life. Rastas live all over the world. There are rastas in Europe, Asia, New Zealand, United States and Africa.
