The D stands for Dan and in November of 1971, Cooper bought a ticket under an ID with the name Dan Cooper. A miscommunication led to a paper publishing that it was D.B. Cooper, which better matches the face of the composite sketches.
Agents theorized that Cooper took his alias from a popular Belgian comic book series of the 1970's. It features the fictional hero, Dan Cooper. He was a Royal Canadian Air Force Test Pilot. He took part in countless adventures, including parachuting. Dan Cooper comics had never translated into English, nor was it imported into the US.
