Divorce is more common in America than it is in other countries, but the divorce levels have steadied since the introduction of “no-fault” divorces. This is the kind of divorce where no one has done something wrong; the marriage has simply fallen apart. However, the only reason it seems like there’s a high divorce rate in America is because when no-fault divorces were first introduced, it became much easier for women to get out of abusive marriages.
Before that, both people had to show up to court, and there had to be clear proof. Someone that was good at hiding the abuse could keep the marriage going by not showing up to court, by telling a better story, or by having such a good facade that no one believed they were capable of abuse.
