Indian work culture is rather different from that seen in the United States. However, it is incredibly difficult to completely generalize what a business in India sees as importance, since it may differ from business to business. Most generally agree that it is best to address and greet the most senior in a room first.
This can be done with either the normal handshake known here in the west, or it can be done with the namaste (palms together with fingers pointing up accompanied by a slight bow). Often, saying “no” to a request is seen as completely offensive, and so Indians may use phrases like “it’ll be difficult” or “I’ll try” to mean “no.” It is suggested that you ask questions that open up a possibility for a different arrangement to get a better answer.
