Facebook has complete control of WhatsApp because they purchased the company from its co-founders, Brian Acton and Jan Koum for $22 billion. Yes, that’s billion with a “b”. Both of these original co-founders initially joined Facebook but recently left. Action left in September 2017 and Koum in May 2018.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Acton “walked away from $900 million in unvested shares, while Koum, will leave $400 million in unvested shares.” The WSJ also wrote, “Both men had to stay on at Facebook until November 2018 to fully vest their shares.”
