Bandicoots are small non-climbing, nocturnal, marsupial mammals. They have a body shape like a rat but they are about the size of a rabbit. As with many animals, male bandicoots are about two times larger than females. A Long-nosed Bandicoot weighs about 1.5 kg (3.3 pounds) and averages 30-43 cm long (12-17 inches).
A Northern Brown Bandicoot is a little bigger because is weighs about 2.1 kg (4.6 pounds) and can be as long as about 47 cm (18 inches). Most bandicoots are only about 1 cm when they are born and may take about three months to live independently.
