Bandicoots are found mainly in Australia and New Guinea. According to Bush Heritage Australia, a non-profit organization working to protect Australian native species, there are seven bandicoot species surviving in Australia. Two species, the Long-nosed Bandicoot and the Northern Brown Bandicoot are living on reserves managed by Bush Heritage Australia.
The Long-nosed Bandicoot lives on three reserves: Brogo (NSW), Fan Palm and Yourka (Queensland). The Northern Brown Bandicoot lives on Fan Palm, Yourka and Carnarvon Station reserves (all in Queensland). Two additional species, the Golden Bandicoot and the Eastern Barred Bandicoot are threatened but being managed by Bush Heritage Australia in partnerships.
