The word "cartoon" has most times been argued to have come from the Dutch word Karton and the Italian word cartoon. While the two words karton and cartone are usually considered as the etymology of the word cartoon, the use of this word to represent a sequence of drawings or illustrations that portray caricature, satire, or humor began in the 1800s.
Although the use of cartoons started as a way of expressing one's feelings, emotions, and even ideas, however, cartoons are now being used on different kinds of publications such as newspapers, magazines, comic books, etc.
According to history, artists like Lorenzo Benini and Leonardo da Vinci set the stage for the modern use of cartoons to depict certain things. These two artists worked so well, and they were able to add definite form and shape to their compositions through the use of cartoons. However, it is believed that William Hogarth set the foundation for political and editorial cartoons.
