The C flute is the most common type of flute, followed closely by the piccolo. However, there are a two other types of flutes that include the alto flute and the bass flute. These are not at all common and aren’t seen in most concert or military bands.
Other kinds of flutes include: treble flute in G, soprano flute in Eb, tenor flute in Bb or A, and the contra-alto flute in G. Contra- and hyperbass flutes are almost seen as a novelty item.
There are a few types of popular flutes. One is called the Piccolo which was first developed in the 18th century. It is more challenging to play than other types of flutes. The Alto flute dates to the early Renaissance and it is quite popular among recitalists. It has been used for many different types of music, including solo, chamber and orchestral work.
The bass flute is a novelty and it is very large with some bass flutes looking more like a saxophone. Other bass flutes have been made with the tube of the flute bent diagonally below the embouchure hole and a brace which rests on the player's thigh to support the largeness of the instrument. It is rare to find a bass flute part written into any significant work.
