Floppy disk is a storage device. It was used to store and share information among many computer devices. Over the years, there has been a drastic decrease in the use of a floppy disk. In fact, it is not easy to find someone using floppy disk in this time. This is mainly due to the low storage capacity of the device. The size of a floppy disk is about 1.44MB. Over 700 floppy disks make 1GB. Technology has gone pass the stage of such storage capacity.
People need larger storage devices to share information. To use a floppy disk a floppy drive is required on the computer system. Due to how irreverant this has become, new computers do not have floppy drive. No company manufacture floppy disk for the public.
IBM produced the first commercially available floppy disks back in 1971. These disks weren't the 3.5-inch floppy disks we remember today. These were 8-inch disks that were quite a pain to pass around because they got dirty very easily. It took a number of years, but finally in 1984 it produced the floppy disk 90s kids knew, love, and remember today.
The disappearance of the floppy disk was quite natural with the advent of newer technology that allowed more memory to be placed on smaller drives. This caused the price margins for floppy disks to shrink, eventually making them a relic of the past.
