The National Coffee Association states on their website “No one knows exactly how or when coffee was discovered, though there are many legends about its origin.” One very interesting legend on their website recounts an old Ethiopian tale about a goat herder who noticed his goats became more active and didn’t want to sleep after they had eaten certain berries.
The goat herder took some beans to the local monastery. The abbot at the monastery made a drink with the berries and discovered he too was kept awake “through the long hours of evening prayer. The abbot shared his discovery with the other monks at the monastery, and knowledge of the energizing berries began to spread.”
