There are quite a lot of different type drums as well as different ways to categorize drums. Within each of these basic types there are further types.
For example, bongos, congas, and naals are all played with the hands. Drums can also be differentiated by the area of the world where they originated. Most drums come from Africa, Latin America or the Middle East. However, some also come from Europe and some from island nations and from Native American culture.
