Not always. Some high functioning and covert narcissists will maintain a circle of friends and different groups they hang out with, but it is usually because the people around them are indulging the narcissist with attention and praise. Most narcissists are not friendly with others unless they are getting something out of it.
However, they never get close enough for any length of time to expose their con. Having these so-called friends around to support the scam to make the narcissist look like a nice normal person is all a part of their game. Also, many narcissists tend to interact with other narcissists, which makes their social circle very shallow.
