The position of the violin is very important, how you hold it determines the kind of sound it produces. The right way to hold the violin is as follows:
Make sure you are sitting or standing upright, the violin should be placed between the chin and the left shoulder such that the elbow is under the centre of the violin; make such the left shoulder remain in a relaxed state; the left arm should be away from the body so that there would be space to move it; make sure your left thumb is in the same position every time you play and keep a straight line from the left elbow through the left wrist.
The violin is held horizontally and is angled to the left of a straightforward position. Place the violin on your left collarbone, and ret the left side of your jaw on the chin rest. Many violinists find shoulder rests helpful to hold up the violin, and there are a variety of shoulder rests available.
Some violinists use round makeup sponges and others use shoulder rests to feel comfortable. The elbow should be under the center of the violin. Keep your wrist gently rounded. Avoid resting the wrist against the violin neck. The thumb should be opposite the first or second finger. Maintain a curved, open space between the thumb and the index finger.
