After watching all the players at Wimbledon in so much white, I honestly believe that this tennis championshiphas the strictest dress codewhen compared to all other Grand Slam Tennis tournaments. The reason behind this white tradition is shocking and dumb. Even you will ask, “Is it really worth it?”
The rule that players must wear all white was first implemented by the All-England-Club where the tournament is played. Back in the 1800s, sweat stains due to perspiration while playing were seen as unpleasant and unseemly, especially for women. Soon enough white became the official color for this tournament.
The tournament club members believed that other colored clothes would have more sweat stains and that these stains are improper and white will definitely minimize their visibility. This unbelievable rule is getting strict day-by-day. Any visible undergarments (or accidentally visible during play, due to perspiration) must also be white.
Martina Navratilova, nine-time winner of this tournament was questioned about the blue strips on her skirt and it was really disgusting. Apart from this, Roger Federer was also questioned for his orange-soled shoes and he confessed his feelings against it in a press conference.
Truly an unnecessary rule!
