Project Maven focuses on computer vision, which is an aspect of machine learning and deep learning that autonomously extracts objects of interest from moving or still imagery. It is entirely feasible that the Pentagon will be able to resume the work of Project Maven and other AI programs with replacement contractors if it wanted to reach out to these skeptical of how the algorithm would interpret images, it could try justifying the mission with national security concerns, but with transparency. IBM and smaller firms like Colorado-based Digital Globe have also been invited to participate in the programs.
Google does not have any plans to renew the contract with Project Maven simply because they feel that their company values have been affected greatly by the change. It is possible that other companies would like to take over the project especially those who already have a background about how Project Maven is supposed to work.
Perhaps if a company has views and values that are somewhat similar to Project Maven will take the project, it can be implemented better. For Google, it did not turn out so well with employees protesting and even resigning because of the said project. As of now, the connection of technology to this project will continue to be a secret.
