Why doesn't the USA accept refugees even though it has enormous areas to accomodate them?

The US sets an annual quota for global refugees, as well as regional quotas; States should accept applicants who are willing and capable of reciprocity with the society that he or she joins. If the refugee is coming into the county to contribute to the labor force, consumption, or admitting, the individual is essential.

However, we have veterans who have risked their lives to fight for American freedoms but are passed over to accommodate foreign refugees that have not done anything for the country.

The reason for this is highly political. It can be bad for the USA to just accept and accept all of the refugees from different parts of the world. They do accept a certain percentage and these people have gone through screening before getting accepted. There are some families that are not placed together in one country and would need to seek refuge elsewhere.

Take note that Americans have seen a lot of stories in the news about how helping other people may backfire on them. They do not want the time to come when they have taken much more than what they can handle. It may lead to the downfall of the nation.
