The pituitary gland is the master gland present in the brain. It has two sections, the anterior pituitary and the posterior pituitary. The anterior pituitary secretes 7 different hormones that have varied functions in the body. The posterior pituitary secretes 2 hormones that regulate fluid levels as well as oxytocin, a female hormone.
There are many times when you are required to take a scan of the pituitary gland. However, transverse sections often have streaks that can obscure the view of the tiny gland. Instead, the scans of the pituitary gland are taken in the coronal plane to minimize streak artifacts.
