Such a tragedy, the death of well-loved, even idolised singer, Edith Piaf whose husky voice charmed so many. Her death was not followed by an autopsy so the cause has never been truly identified. It is variously given as cirrhosis of the liver, cancer or brain haemorrage. Piaf wished to die in Paris, but did so in her villa with her husband on the French riviera. She was then driven in the dark of night by her husband and/or nurse to Paris for burial.
This action avoided the autopsy, whether this was a deliberate ploy or not. Piaf's whole life was a series of desperately sad health issues, but her addiction to pain killers only started after injuries following the first of several very bad car crashes. Piaf suffered further pain from arthritis, for which she became further dependent upon pain killers. It may have been the addiction and its possible connection with her health status that led to some secrecy around her death.
However, the worst aspect was the refusal of the Bishop of Paris to conduct a burial ceremony because of her 'wild' lifestyle. Nevertheless, almost the whole of Paris turned out to honour her.
