Burgers are often seen everywhere. You can order one at almost every restaurant in the United States. However, other countries sell burgers also. Due to the name of the sandwich, the hamburger, it should not be unlikely that the hamburger was created in Germany where there is a city named Hamburg. In 1758, there is a recipe found that included a form of hamburger or sausage that was made into a patty and roasted.
Then it is placed in between two pieces of bread. The bread is toasted. One hundred years later, another version of the hamburger surfaced and it was founded in Hamburg, Germany. It seems that Germany may be the main place where the burger originated, but the time it was founded is not certain.
The word 'burger' is short for Hamburger, taken from the German town of Hamburg where In the 19th century, beef from German Hamburg cows was minced and combined with garlic, onions, salt and pepper, then formed into patties (without bread or a bun) to make Hamburg steaks. It is thought that emigrants from Hamburg arriving in America on the Hamburg Line ships were fed with such steaks quickly shoved between two slices of bread.
There are three American claims for inventing the burger. Each may be true...it's likely that given some knowledge of cooking beef this way that the idea of placing a patty between halved buns came naturally to restaurants providing for those who needed to eat on the run. Each claim places the 'invention' at the end of the 19th century.
