Elephants have trunks and tusks. The trunk is used for many different purposes including picking food up off the ground as well as sucking up water and then spraying it either into its mouth or onto its back. The tusk on the other hand has one main function and it is used to hurt others. It can intimidate other animals or people by trying to stab it with its tusks.
It would get the animal or person onto the ground and then get on top of them. Then stab them with its tusks. The only other purpose of the tusks is not for the elephant but for the poachers. They hunt elephants and remove their tusks in order to use the ivory from them. They sell it and make a lot of money.
Some people have wondered why the tusks of elephants are very important. Elephants use their tusks for survival. For example, there are some elephants that use their tusks in order to get water underneath the ground. They can also use the tusks in order to fight with other elephants or to protect themselves from other creatures that will cause them or the rest of the herd harm.
When the tusks of elephants are removed, their line of defense is also being lessened. Take note that not all elephant breeds have tusks. For instance, Asian elephants may not have tusks. This sets them apart from African elephants. An older African elephant will have a longer tusk than a younger one.
