This is a difficult question to answer, since fashion is so incredibly subjective. However, the guideline tends to be a slim-leg pant and, if you’re going with Derby shoes, a well cut jean could work.
Dress shoes and shorts don’t mix well, so try to avoid that. However, do try to make sure your shoes are neutral colors for a dressy option. Funky colors and dressy shoes do not tend to mix well. Another thing to do before leaving the house when you’re unsure of how you look: look in the mirror! This is a good way to know whether something looks right or not. It could be the best thing, too, especially if you need to make sure you’re well-dressed for work or a special night out.

If you've decided on wearing open-laced shoes, then a two button suit will look good. You can even wear jeans with these Derbies provided they're well cut jeans slim enough to sit well at the bottoms. Derbies do allow for informality and relaxation.
Just avoid wide legged pants, and I'm not sure shorts would look okay, but take a good look in a long mirror before you step out, and perhaps ask a lover or friend first.
