The entire country is not covered by desert. Saudi Arabia is currently about half desert, by the requirements needed to name a place a desert. However, it has a lot of areas that come very close to being called deserts. Much of the fertile land for agriculture is on the coastline.
Despite this, Saudi Arabia’s government has been making headway in helping the country do more to support itself, food-wise. A lot of the land slightly further inland from the coast has successfully been turned into agricultural land. Due to this, there entire country is not desert.
However, what desert remains is part of the Arabian desert. This is the desert that covers much of the Middle East. It is also one of the most ecologically diverse deserts in the world.
Saudi Arabia is mostly desert, much of it uninhabited. One of these is the world's largest continuous sand desert. There are in fact three types of desert there. It is a water poor country. It has the largest sand mass in the world.
However, at its coast there are small fertile areas and an important port. As for plants, there are 2,250 species of flora excluding grasses and mosses. Amazingly, and impressively, Saudi Arabia has turned areas of desert into agricultural land in recent years.
