We have all been to prom. It is the most awaited event in high school. However, did you ever wonder where it originated? The dressed up occasion is celebrated by schools up and down the country. For some, it is a great event. It is not quite s festive for others. Nevertheless, its origin dates back to the start of the 20th century.
Back then, it was just a tea dance. Slowly, it evolved into an annual dance. Over the years, prom has changed into a fancy event requiring fancy attire, transport and invites. There are polls for the best dressed and of course, the prom king and queen.

It's such a documented occasion, like a wedding or bar mitzvah, such a phenomenon causing huge amounts of emotional energy in the US, filled with wonderful joy for some and utter misery for others. What to wear, who to go with, where you stand in competition with other Prom goers. Who will be prom king and queen?

In the 1950s proms expanded into elaborate codes of dress, mode of transport (snazziest car) and location changed from the school hall to country club or large hotel. Being prom queen or king denoted the ultimate in popularity. The prom has become the key event in a teenager's life, for many a preparation for the wedding.
