The term "friendship zone" was invented by an episode of the American sitcom Friends titled "The One with the Blackout" which was a season one episode. This was in 1994 and the term became popular. The character Ross Geller, who was in love with Rachel Green, was described by Joey Tribbiani as being the "mayor of the friend zone".

Friendzone simply means when you are friends with someone you would prefer being in a romantic relationship with. The term has become popular ever since it's appearance of the sitcom.

The term friendzone was publicised by a 1994 episode of the sitcom "Friends." The episode was entitled, "The one with the blackout." The character, Ross was lovesick for Rachel. Joey described Ross as being the "mayor of the friend zone."

In our culture, the friendzone is a situation in which one person of a friendship wants to enter into a romantic or sexual partnership, while the other does not. Some women feel that the concept of the friendzone is offensive because it implies an expectation that a woman should have sex with men in whom they have no interest.
