There are some animals that are known for their teeth. For example, the extinct saber-toothed tiger had large teeth that will surely be scary to a lot of people. Yet, there are also some animals who do not have any teeth at all. There are different species of fish that do not have teeth.
The turtles that you may be taking care of at home may not have teeth as well. Tortoises do not have teeth too but there are some who would be able to remove your fingers through their jaws. There are also different birds that rely on beaks instead of teeth. Can you still think of other animals that do not have teeth at all?
Anteaters and pangolins are the only two mammals that don’t have teeth. Both animals have powerful claws which they use to dig into ant hills and rotting wood to locate larvae, grubs, and other insects such as termites. After digging, they then pick up their prey with their long sticky tongues.
An anteater’s tongue is twice as long as its head. A pangolin’s tongue is longer than its body and extends back into a special cavity within its abdomens. It also consume small rocks and pebbles to help with digestion similar to the way gizzards function in birds such as ducks, chickens and turkeys.
