What happens to our bodies when we die, is really kind of gross. First, within just a few minutes, a decomposition process called autolysis, or self-digestion begins. Without oxygen circulating in the body’s blood, the cells begin producing toxic by-products and the cell membranes start to leak enzymes and damaged blood cells. The body’s skin becomes discolored because gravity pulls the leaking fluids into capillaries and small veins.

The body’s temperature also drops, followed by rigor mortis beginning in the eyelids, jaw and neck muscles. This muscle stiffness then spreads into the trunk and limbs. The body’s immune system no longer works so bacteria start to move throughout the body creating decomposition. Putrefaction, which is the breakdown of soft tissues starts once the bacteria escape from the body’s gastrointestinal tract. It gets really gross after this with bloating, maggots and other things I don’t want to talk about.
