How confidential information should be sent using an unsecured network?

It doesn't take long for a hacker to gain significant personal information as evidenced by ethical hackers this week announcing it took only 2 hours to access such data from British universities. If security is to be maintained, data should be sent in an encrypted form. That is the only way to bypass unwanted intrusion and access to important data and to protect individuals.
