How did UMBC upset the #1 seen Virginia?

This is considered to be one of the first 16-over-1 upset. Virginia is known as the number 1 seed so it was truly unexpected when they lost. Some say that UBMC is like Cinderella because it was able to reach its dreams even for a little while. A lot of people are still upset and confused about this.

Some say that this is because of Jairus Lyles’ of UBMC’s ability to keep up with the expected standards as he made 28 points during the game. Aside from that, the defense of Virginia was not that good. This comes as a surprise because this is a group that is highly known for their defense.

The reason that the University of Maryland Baltimore County was able to defeat the number one seeded Virginia Cavaliers in the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament was that they used an up tempo game to neturalize the half court game that Virginia had utilized for several years under head coach Tony Bennett. UMBC was hitting all of their shots and they were constantly using a full court press that was throwing off the balance of the UVA demeanor and game.

UMBC simply could not miss any shots and they were able to employ a defense that stymied any hopes that Virginia had. It can easily be said that the upset that UMBC and head coach Ryan Odom pulled off against Virginia was the biggest upset in the history of sports. They were able to pull of this monumental upset because UMBC outcoached and outplayed UVA. It was one of those cases of where David was actually able to slay the Goliath and the proof was there for everyone to see.
