If you plan on taking the Shinkansen Bullet Train in Japan, it is best to familiarize yourself with the routes, sectors and trains that are a part of this system. Then you should get a pass either at the station or online. When you buy the pass, it is important that you are aware of all of the trips that this particular pass will allow you to go. If you don’t, then you may buy the wrong pass. There are two sectors and many different routes for each sector.
There are also different trains for this system. Also, you should be aware that certain passes do not allow you to get on each train. For example, the pass will not allow you to get on the Nozomi which is considered to be the fastest train.
To obtain a pass for the Shinkansen Bullet train in Japan, it is likely you will need to purchase it in person at the station. While it is possible to purchase the ticket online, it is almost impossible to do so without speaking Japanese.
If you would like to sit in a reserved car, then you will need an advanced seat reservation, but this is not entirely necessary. Depending on your country of origin, there is an option to use an IC card on an English app or Japanese website to book your fare. This option is discounted by 200 yen but is not available to Japan Rail Pass users to book advanced seating.
