The noble aim of peace-keeping depends on the United Nations remaining united and a large and powerful nation has recently shown that its leader is not committed to remaining so.This country is the United States. There are terrible hardships causing war and atrocities made in its name.
These can only be eradicated by the non-violent world agreeing to take joint action against perpetrator nations...by violent means, it seems. Hence peace seems an ideal that is unobtainable.
I do not think it is at all likely that the United Nations (UN) will fail in its peacekeeping objectives. It is true that in the 1990’s the reputation of UN peacekeeping was tarnished as their efforts in the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda and Somalia were not very successful. However, those setbacks led the UN to review their operations to figure out what went wrong and to put plans in place to help prevent future failures.
More recently, in October 2014, the UN Secretary-General “established a 17-member High-level Independent Panel on UN Peace Operations to make a comprehensive assessment of the state of UN peace operations and the emerging needs of the future. The HIPPO report, as it is known, was issued in June 2015, with key recommendations for the way forward for peace operations. In September 2015, the Secretary-General’s issued his own report on the implementation of these recommendations and the future of peace operations.”
