Mt Etna formed over 500,000 years ago under the sea and off the coast of Sicily. The history of this volcano is very active and has caused many changes in the land that surrounds it. Due to the enormous eruptions about 8,000 years ago the earth shifted around the sides of the volcano causing a tsunami, which took its toll in the Mediterranean and an Israeli settlement which is since then below sea level. In 396 BC an eruption stopped the Carthaginians from raiding Syracuse during the Second Sicilian War.
Where some volcanic activity destroyed, there was some that allowed settlement on land formed by the lava that had hardened. Several villages were built on the areas that were created. Even though the volcano has an active history, there has been very little human life lost in comparison to other eruptions, earthquakes and added natural disasters.
