English is an Indo European language. It draws from many other languages most especially French. English draws from many Romance languages like Spanish, Latin, Italian and Portuguese. The English alphabets is greatly influenced by Greek and Latin.
Though English is drawn from many Romance languages, it does not belong to the family of Romance languages. It is a Germanic language and it is closely related to Frisian, German and Dutch.
English is a language that is very rich and has been able to draw its originis from several other languages. English is one of the Germanic languages and it is believed that its biggest inspiration is French. Being one of the Germanic languages, English belongs to same group as that of German and Dutch. English is first being noted as a regularly spoken and written language to the year 500 and the formulation of what was known as Old English. That period lasted 500 years and gave birth to the Middle English era.
Currently, the English language is known as Modern English. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the entire world. It is said that the first English dictionary was published in 1604. The language is constantly changing and new words and prhases are added every single year. English also has a strong influence from Latin as that too is one of the romance languages like French is. English has a strong history and a tradition of customs just likes it influences and other languages from around the world.
