I always think of touchscreen television as only suitable for people who lie on the floor with their noses to the screen. A dog might do this. I would concede that there is a real need to simplify the very annoying controller devices.
Technology has surely advanced to the point where every TV could be sold with a controller that can operate all aspects of TV watching. Let me be fair to the touchscreen products. The given benefits are speed; touchscreen means operating any device faster. It's easy to use, avoids controllers which may need replacing at some point and it is cheaper to produce TVs with touchscreen.
One could certainly argue that touchscreen television is the most useles invention ever. It is very easy to understand why this is the case. If a person had a touchscreen television and they were sitting on the couch and watching the tube, if they wanted to change the channel or do any other function, they would have to get up and walk to the television in order to perform the function that they want done. This was the reason that remote controls were made. It allowed for people to be able to functions right from their chair or couch without having to get up and go to the television. A touchscreen television is making the world of televisions to regress. Going up to a touchscreen television to do operations would be no different then going up to a very old television and turning knobs to tune it in. Touchscreen televisions are certainly an innovation that comes from touchscreen mobile devices but the thing is that it really has no application or solving any problems thus you can argue that touchscreen televisions are one of the most useless inventions there ever was.
