There seems to be an Oscars curse wherein when the movie does well in the box office, it has a lesser chance of winning. This is what a lot of movies have experienced in the Oscars. There are some movies, however, that have done well in the box office but were still able to win the Oscars. For example, Titanic won a lot of awards.
Recently, commercially successful films were not able to win the Oscars yet. It is likely that the judges just believe that there are some Oscar films that have done well in the box office but have not won any awards. It seems that some of the hits have the same stories so the Oscars may want new concepts at present time.
There have been a number of good and commercially successful films to win one if not more Oscars in the passed such as The Sound of Music and Titanic. But for some reason, in recent years it seems that any box office hits never end up winning an oscar. Many do not even get nominated for the award.
Some think the reason for that is that those voting for who wins the award are beginning to snub major films and blockbuster hits. Hollywood seems to be releasing films with the same plot or reboots of old movies. So it does make sense that they would be tired of the same old stuff.
