The greek economy failed primarily because over the last 40 or something years, the greek were lured by crooks to find votes. As a result of great corruption and frauds done by these crooks, the Greek economy was not able to survive. Most of the MPs that have been appointed in Greece have been related to each other.

Hence, it is obvious that there is a family tree of politicians that have continuously been robbing Greece off. Due to a lot of debt and irresponsibility of the leaders, Greece has never been able to rise. The debt here being the prime reason.
