In strictly scientific terms, time is defined as the duration between two events. For the sake of measurement, a standard for a single second is set by the International system of units. According to this standard, one second equals 9,192, 631, 770 periods of the radiation that correspond to the caesium 133 atom’s transition between two levels of its ground state.

Time is referred to as a scalar quantity in classical physics and is fundamental to measurements of speed, acceleration, and velocity. It can also be combined with other physical quantities such as forces so as to derive the definition of momentum.
