The globe of planet Earth is 360 degrees as a spherical shape. Lines of longitude run from the North Pole to the South Pole in 15 degree increments, with 24 total lines, one for each hour of the day.

Therefore there are 24 total time zones at increments of 15 degrees of longitude; the sun is at its highest point in the middle of each time zone, or at 12:00 noon. The Prime Meridian was arbitrarily chosen to be the longitudinal line running through Greenwich, England. Conversely to lines of longitude, lines of latitude run horizontally around the Earth.
