Aaliyah died August 25, 2001, in a chartered private plane crash at the Marsh Harbour Airport, in Abaco Islands, in The Bahamas, as it was headed to Miami. She was 22 at the time of her death, and had just completed filming the music video for her single Rock the Boat.
Eight other people were also killed as part of the crash, including employees from Virgin Records America, and the aircraft, a chartered twin-engine Cessna 402B, may have been overloaded. Her funeral was in Manhattan on August 31, 2001, only a month after her third album was released, the self-titled Aaliyah.
