Leaf spots is more like an umbrella term that is used for the spots that appear on the leaves. There are various reasons for the white spots that you can see on the leaves. The prime reason is the sooty mold. The sooty mold is a type of fungus that tends to grow on a range of leaves on the sugary substance that different insects leave behind after feeding on the leaves.
This fungus does not directly harm the leaves, however they do cover up the area that can be used for photosynthesis. Apart from that, powdery mildew is another fungus that appears as white spots on leaves.
