The practice of judging another culture by the standards of one’s own culture.
Ethnocentrism is a social science that involves one individual thinking or believing they are better than other people based on their religion, race, culture, practices, language, customs, and behavior. It is sometimes related to racism, discrimination, stereotyping, and xenophobia.
People that discriminate against other people’s cultures, races, or beliefs are considered ignorant of the person’s culture. The word Ethnocentrism was first introduced by an American sociologist William G. Summer.
The opposite of the word ethnocentrism is Xenocentrism. This is a belief that someone’s culture is greater than their own. An example is a British lady insisting the American culture is better than the British way of life.
