At one time, slavery existed in Canada, but it soon stopped slavery. Slavery continued in the United States and areas in the tropical islands. However, it would be a long time before slavery was stopped in the United States. Many slaves would try to escape. It was known that they were trying to escape to Canada. Some areas in the United States in the northern part of it were known to be areas that would help runaway slaves. They had to keep them secret.

Also, the Underground Railroad was created in order to help runaway slaves to go to Canada for freedom. Harriet Tubman was known for conducting the Underground Railroad and freeing not only her own family but several other runaway slaves as well.
