There are many languages spoken in South Africa. Throughout its history there have probably been over 30 languages spoken. Many people in South Africa speak more than one language. This may make it difficult to communicate with other people in the country. As a matter of fact South Africa has 11 official languages and Afrikaans and Zulu are two of them. About one fourth of the people in South Africa speaker Zulu.
Less than 15% of the south Africans speak Afrikaans. So it would probably be more beneficial to learn Zulu then Afrikaans because more people speak Zulu. However it would be beneficial to probably learn several different languages in order to communicate with more people in South Africa including the 11 official languages.
